From a young age, Anders B. Jensen’s fascination with electronics and electricity was evident. It all began when his grandmother allowed him to explore a small suitcase filled with wires and electric sockets, an unconventional playtime choice that sparked a lifelong interest in electronics. While some family members may have questioned her judgment, it set the stage for Anders’ remarkable journey into the world of technology.
Anders’ journey took a significant turn when he crossed paths with Lars Gleesborg during their eighth-grade years. Both shared a deep passion for electronics, wires, and technology, which led to a strong bond between them. After school, they would eagerly tinker with old devices like TVs and radios, further fueling their shared interest.
While it was clear that Anders wanted to do something related to electronics, he was uncertain about the exact path to take. He decided to begin advancing as an electronic technician. Upon completing his education, he found himself working at a radio and TV shop, where he repaired vintage TVs, video machines, and tape recorders.
Following these experiences, Anders’ career took him to Dan Control Engineering, where he spent a decade enhancing his skills. In December 1997, he and Lars decided to go on a journey together and founded Spica Technology as a hobby project. Lars was committed to it full-time from the beginning, while Anders joined him in 2005, leaving his fulltime job.
This important moment also marked the introduction of another partner to the company and a move from Lars’ bedroom to a 50-square-meter shack in Anders’ backyard. At this point, Spica Technology had secured contracts with both Vestas and Svendborg Brakes.
The driving force behind the creation of Spica Technology in 1997 was the shared belief that developing electronics, different from their regular day jobs, would be fun.
Spica Technology’s initial focus was on designing new circuit boards and small widgets, which quickly earned them a reputation for their expertise. For Anders, the joy of creating something and making it work remained the driving force behind Spica’s growth.
In 2009, Benny Thomsen joined Spica Technology as CEO and became a partner, replacing the previous partner from 2005. With a background in recruitment, Benny’s introduction to Spica Technology stemmed from his efforts to find new employees for the company. His proactive approach, along with a shared passion for technology and electronics, led Lars and Anders to welcome him as CEO.
Over the years, Spica Technology steadily grew, changing locations multiple times before settling at Ørstedsvej 5 in Silkeborg, Denmark in 2009. However, a significant setback occurred in 2017 when Lars Gleesborg, one of the founding members, passed away. This loss hit hard, particularly for Anders, who not only lost his business partner but also his closest friend.
In the same year, Jan Gerber joined as an Advisory Board Executive, a sales office in Barcelona was established, and the webshop www.spicacontrols.com, offering FT Technologies and Bachmann electronic spare parts for wind turbines, was launched.
By 2017, Siemens Gamesa and KK Wind Solutions, among others, had become clients of Spica Technology. Since then, the company has welcomed numerous new clients into its repertoire. Spica Technology’s success was further recognized when it was awarded the title of a successful Danish company in 2020, 2021, and 2022, with 2022 marking the year it received a Børsen Gazelle award.
In the years 2022 and 2023, Spica Technology built new collaborations with companies like Semco Maritime, ProCon, and Vattenfall, setting its position as a dynamic player in the wind power industry.
The journey of childhood friends Anders B. Jensen and Lars Gleesborg, from tinkering with wires and old devices to building a thriving engineering company, is an evidence to their passion, innovation, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
As of today, Spica Technology counts a dedicated team of 25 talented individuals. Exciting developments are on the horizon, looking forward to the spring of 2024 when a relocation from the current address at Ørstedsvej 5 to new, expanded headquarters at Bergsøesvej 12 in Silkeborg, Denmark. This move will grant a fourfold increase in office space and more than double the area allocated for production and warehousing, paving the way for even greater opportunities and growth.
